What are Free-to-Air satellites?
Free-to-Air (FTA) satellites are communications satellites that provide their users with unencrypted local and international signals broadcast directly to your television. Unlike encrypted pay-television provided by corporate satellite providers, FTA satellites are free of monthly payments and require no programming charges. All that is required is the initial purchase of the satellite dish and receiver and the simple mechanical installation of the dish.
There are two types of FTA systems, the smaller commercially sold K-band and large-scale C-band used by television stations to upload and to receive large amounts of broadcasted information. More commonly referred to as the mini-dish systems, K-band satellites have become a well-known fixture in the home as they are used by both pay-satellite television subscribers and FTA purchasers.
What channels can be accessed?
There are a wide range of local and international television programs that are easily accessed through FTA signals. In North America, the vast majority of ethnic-language broadcasts are provided as FTA channels as well as a few English-language channels such as global broadcast news and local information channels. For a complete and current listing of available free channels, please click here for more information.
What are the restrictions?
Contrary to the popular belief that all free signals are stolen signals, free-to-air programming has been present since the emergence of direct-broadcast satellites. Several continents prefer the usage of satellite television as opposed to cable television because of cable television's higher start-up costs. Whereas the majority of North American programming began as encrypted cable television and graduated to encrypted satellite television, much of the programming provided by overseas countries has always been unencrypted to provide for a bigger audience.
Why Free-to-Air?
Depending where your interests lie, cable television and pay-subscription satellite television are often not compatible with your home's viewing preferences. Why pay an expensive monthly fee to access the average North American pre-selected channel packages when many of the channels that interest you are available for free through your FTA Satellite?
Even if you do enjoy basic North American programming, there are many who also enjoy the educational advantages of global non-English language programming to enhance their multi-lingual skills. FTA is a cost-effective way to broaden and improve your knowledge of other languages and cultures.
